Mystery from the bike ride: on the beaver pond, dark starfish shaped cracks in the ice. No trees overhead for something to fall down from. Varying sizes. The water on top of them is frozen and mostly clear.

Check out the replies for the cause and a couple links!

Strange and interesting. I also see a crab with its pincers outstretched. 😂

If i may, because obviously they're everywhere: this photo shows the Schlei in Schleswig/northern germany in 2015!

(My guess is: stones or rocks were thrown into the ice, some thawing and re-freezing et voila!)

@arappathor it’s a great guess, but no stones nearby. I suppose someone could bring some from elsewhere, parking is half a mile away. 🤔

I've found something - if anyone's still interested - on the Wikipedia. It's called Dampfloch, and sorry, there really isn't an English wiki-article.

@arappathor Safari has a translate button that does a good job of turning it into English, which calls it "Steam holes” but still nothing found for that on english wikipedia. Their example photo is excellent.

@arappathor
There’s a Swiss weather report site with some pictures and a video the drawing probably came from (at about 4:40). It’s in Swiss German so I could only catch every fifteenth word, but the pictures are interesting. Basically the water has to be shallow and there has to have been a cold snap (so the water is still a bit warm) and no snow or anything to block the sun.
